9:17 AM, the 5th of May. As Magdalene Speer stepped from her office, the sun shone on the marble flooring of the Volksbank. From the outside, it is a shining beacon. A classic design- something you would've seen in the old Germany- colossal pillars stand outside of the main entrance, leading into an intricate series of engravings spiraling around the pillars as each one met with the overhang.
The inside was no less intricate- and expensive. Detailed murals carved from stone line the walls, the flooring adorned in carpets and furniture, all sourced from the Union. The main desk spans for an ungodly amount of time, totaling some 20 individual stations- all manned by a clerk, ready for the typhoon wave of workers.
The name- The Volksbank- was a construct of Magdalene herself. 'Too long has the government and the banks served the rich and the powerful- if we want the will of the people, they must know that we serve them.'- were the words she spoke to Staas when he asked for her assistance. Powerful words, yes, but could she live up to it? Only time would tell.
Magdalene had created (what she hoped) would bring prosperity, even if for just a moment, to the nation. Staas had already implemented higher taxes, purely for the expansion of the Wehrmacht, but the leftover funds gave Magdalene some breathing room to finally provide at a basic level of what she dreamed of- a welfare state. For now, improved infrastructure and healthcare.
Magdalene snapped back to reality, stepping forward into the main lobby. There, Staas stood, impatiently waiting. She checked her watch; 9:23 AM. Seven minutes.
"Großmarschall Stass, a pleasure to see you." Magdalene greeted Staas warmly.
Staas turned to reply. "Ökonomin Speer, happy to be here." He said, clearly uninterested in being here.
"Everything seems to be in place. The new Reichsmark has been minted and is ready to be pushed out, taxes have been raised- all that's left now is to open up the Volksbank." Magdalene said, uncomfortably shifting her weight. Taking notice, Staas replied;
"You seem... Nervous."
"How can I not be? I fear for Germany's survival, I can assume in good faith that you do as well." Magdalene shifted again, looking out towards the entrance. 9:26. Four minutes. "What if none of it works? We've been torn apart by ourselves, and by those around us. What's stopping them from becoming vultures once more?"
"I do, Speer. The Reich is at it's lowest, it's most vulnerable. There isn't a storm Germany hasn't weathered, it's gone through hell and back. But, we've been given a chance. We just need to push through the darkness and into the light. We'll weather whatever storm they throw at us- either that, or we go down as legends in history."
